About me
I have been teaching music lessons since 2018, with additional teaching experience in 2019, 2023, and 2024. My passion for music, love for encouraging others, and enjoyment of people and conversation inspired me to become a music instructor. I genuinely love what I do for a living and find great joy in sharing my passion with my students.
Teaching philosophy
My approach to teaching is laid-back and spontaneous. I believe in creating interest and building confidence in my students before engaging them in more challenging lessons. Whether it's piano, guitar, drums, or ukulele, I tailor my lessons to each student's interests, helping them play what they love right from the start. This method not only fosters a love for music but also keeps students motivated and engaged.
Engaging lessons
To keep lessons engaging and fun, I use a variety of methods and materials. For piano, I love the Faber method books and musical flash cards, which help students learn note naming through fun exercises and time trials. Incorporating technology, such as Spotify and YouTube, allows us to find and play music that interests each student, making learning more relevant and exciting.
Overcome challenges
One common challenge is ensuring students practice regularly, especially when parental support is lacking. To address this, I use lesson time to demonstrate effective practice techniques, treating our sessions as mock practice sessions for the week ahead. This hands-on approach helps students understand how to practice and stay motivated.
Measure progress
Progress is tracked differently for each instrument. For piano, we use the Faber method books, marking the date at the top of each page to track progress. Guitar lessons focus on building a repertoire of songs, learning chords, and improving transitions. Drums involve mastering basic beats, adding complexity, and refining techniques. Each lesson is tailored to ensure steady progress and continued interest.
Unique approach
What sets my instruction apart is my "don't worry, no pressure" attitude. I strive to make learning enjoyable and stress-free, helping students find optimism and excitement in their musical journey. By focusing on what they want to learn, I skip the often tedious fundamentals and get straight to playing music they love.
Continuous Learning
I stay updated with modern trends and techniques by frequently watching other instructors on YouTube and social media. This allows me to bring fresh perspectives to my lessons and ensures that my teaching methods remain current and effective.
Future Plans
While I don't have any special programs in place yet, I envision organizing performances at nursing homes or similar venues, where the focus is on the experience and enjoyment of playing, rather than perfection. This would provide a wonderful opportunity for students to gain performance experience in a supportive environment.
